The LinkedIn Black Hole

Why Recruiters do not respond to your inquiries & how to take action

See this social icon list in the original post

You attend networking events, you follow advice of career advisors, you research the role and the company. You customise your CV and cover letter accordingly. You submit them into the black hole of applications on LinkedIn and wait. Do some more waiting and then you repeat this process for several times. Does this sound like you??

There is one word to ultimately describe it

Priorities

Although job searching and application submission is one of the utter most priorities for most, recruiters are simply time and resource poor. Human Resource Departments do often not generate income, therefore they simply do not have the time to spend creating relationships and rapports with continuous communication threads of the “potential.”

Time is money. People respond to value not need.

Look familiar?

Okay, so we have established LinkedIn is your best chance of making a good first impression online but how can you maximise your chances of a return message? I will list them simply below:

  1. Include a personalised message as why you are connecting: limit it to around 50 words

  2. Find mutual connections: ask for an introduction

  3. Start contributing to their posts as well as their connections

  4. Ensure your profile highlights your achievements; include numbers/metrics

Still struggling?

Why don’t you try these:

  • Try to find the hiring manager’s email address: go through their profile and see if they have listed it themselves

  • The snail mail still exists! Send your CV in a hard copy to the company addressing the hiring manager

  • Don’t solely rely on LinkedIn: check the company website and see if the job is advertised there as well

  • Visit the office in person if you can!

  • Pick up the phone and ring!
